Commodity Embedded Controllers

Embedded controllers, such as our EyeBot controller are a necessity for building small mobile robots. Unfortunately, low volume production makes these controllers quite expensive and it is difficult to keep up with increasing hardware speed. Therefore, the idea to use commodity consumer hardware, such as mobile phones or PDAs is obvious.

We have looked at a number of different phones and PDAs and provide some guidelines and downloadables for some of them below. Unfortunately, not all manufacturers provide access to camera or communication devices and without them the device is unusable for robotics purposes. Note that in all cases a small external board for sensor input and actuator output (i.e. motor drivers) is required in order to drive a robot.
